How a Sausage Roll Ruined the Party!

This weekend, we had to attend a retirement do for one of Kirsten’s aunties, and if not for a single sausage roll, all would have been excellent with this Saturday night, bar some minor quibbles!

This will be a rather short post – think of it more as a cautionary tale, really.

The evening was actually quite nice. We had a few drinks, caught up with Kirsten’s extended family, and as usual got the “When are you two getting married?” comments far too many times. Anyway, that was nice. We got loads of comments about how much weight we’ve lost – just so encouraging. James has lost 5 stone and Kirsten 4, but somehow we just don’t see it on ourselves. Sure, the numbers on the scale, looser belts, and how our clothes fit are indicative, but in our minds, it hasn’t quite clicked.

I found it so uplifting to hear from many people.

Then the party food turned up. James finished his drink and finally decided to have a sausage roll – his first since the surgery. He ate slowly and, over about 10 minutes, he was still able to finish only something the size of half a normal sausage roll.

That was when things started to go wrong. He began to feel really full and started to feel very unwell about half an hour later. He didn’t seem to be able to move much and looked really unwell. And then, it happened – James rushed to the toilet and was sick.

Being sick after gastric sleeve surgery is a weird sensation. It doesn’t feel like regular vomiting. It’s more of a dry heave, the best way to describe the sensation would probably be something like a cat trying to cough up a fur ball.

Then we decided to call it a night and went home, destroyed by one little sausage roll. In reflection, maybe it’s not such a good idea to try food for the first time in public. We think we are just going to stick with our safe options from now on.
